DAWNGEON is a mobile RPG (role-playing game) that features pixel graphics and gameplay inspired by roguelike mechanics, with randomly generated dungeons and monsters. The game requires skillful mastery of its dual joystick control scheme, which allows players to both move and attack. With a wide variety of around 50 different items and weapons, as well as interactable objects, DAWNGEON offers an enjoyable gameplay experience. Players can engage in combat, cooking, gardening, and exploration.
Set in a post-apocalyptic world, DAWNGEON presents an intriguing narrative with two distinct endings. Following a prolonged period of hibernation, the player awakens to embark on an adventure in a world that has changed greatly. This adventure takes place 50 years after the appearance of the Cracks - openings that allowed monstrous creatures from the underworld to invade Earth, resulting in devastating attacks on cities and the near decimation of humanity. In this bleak reality, survivors now find themselves under the oppressive rule of the Tyrannical Government, which uses its militaristic forces to exert control over people's thoughts, actions, and freedom. Players are presented with the choice of joining a rebel movement to liberate humanity from this despairing world or opposing them.
DAWNGEON is an indie project developed solely by Youngje Park. Park was responsible for all aspects of the game's creation, from graphics and pixel art to soundtrack, game systems, and designs. While some outside resources were used for tree graphics and sound effects, this student project is completely free of charge and devoid of advertisements.
Soul Knights, Undertale, and Archero have all heavily influenced the development of DAWNGEON. Originally conceived as an opportunity for Park to further explore the aiming system found in Soul Knight - one of their favorite childhood games - DAWNGEON eventually incorporated aspects of its gameplay and visual style, alongside Park's own unique ideas. Additionally, Park drew inspiration from Archero's leveling system and Undertale's narrative-driven storytelling, which have added depth and richness to the game.
